Asif and Fo clarification on X
Earlier, Asif cleared his speech at the UNSC conference instead of Shehbaz, as the latter had other involvement. The Prime Minister has been attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
“This woman or the person sitting behind me is and is at the discretion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Asif said.
The Defense Minister said that over the past 60 years he has had an emotional attachment and personal commitment to the Palestinian cause. He added that he had Palestinian friends and colleagues while working in Abu Dhabi and was still in touch with them.
“I have a clear view of Gaza and I have expressed them publicly,” he said, expressing his hatred for Israel and Zionism.
Asif said: “Who is this woman, why is she with the delegation, why is she sitting behind me? Only fo can answer these questions. It is not appropriate to respond to me on behalf of me.”
He said his statement to X proved that his relationship with Palestine was part of his faith.
Subsequently, in a post on Friday night on X, the FO said it noticed questions about “the seat of someone behind the Secretary of Defense at a recent UNDP meeting.” FO does not explicitly name Junejo.
It said: “To be clarified that no official letter of letter of trust was heard about the individual at the 80th UNGA meeting, signed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.”
It added: “The Secretary of Defense therefore did not receive approval from the Deputy Minister/Foreign Secretary.”
Meanwhile, Junejo also landed on X and posted screenshots of previous posts, where she called the genocide of Israel in Gaza.
“For the past two years, I have called me a Zionist almost every day in tweets, a war criminal in Netanyahu and showing Israeli atrocities,” she said.
The word “Youthia” is a derogatory term that is often used as a slander for PTI supporters.
“Again, this whole campaign was launched against me because they were only afraid of me,” she said.
A big uproar
Former Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari said he should not sit behind ministers of the UN Security Council or the UN General Assembly unless he is identified as an official representative of the government.
“So, who allows this to happen? Why? There is a cover policy agenda at work, i.e. Israel, Bagram Base, Abraham Agreement? Republicans need cleaning – who is responsible?” she asked.
