According to peer-reviewed research, international doctors and nurses treating Palestinians in Gaza hospitals described wounds that were more severe than civilians suffered in other modern conflicts. AFP Report.
In the study in the major medical journal BMJ, 78 humanitarian health care workers mostly from Europe and North America answered survey questions describing the severity, location and cause of the wounds they encountered in the Gaza Strip.
The British-led researcher said this only provided an “anecdotal and dispersed” view of the Palestinian wallet during Israel’s nearly two-year offensive against Gaza.
But given that the medical facilities considered to be territory have been destroyed and international access is severely restricted, researchers say this is probably the most comprehensive data on injuries during the conflict.
The study’s lead author, British surgeon Emar El-Taji, has two-thirds of healthcare workers previously deployed to other conflict areas, with the vast majority of them being “the worst thing they’ve ever seen”. AFP.
