If UN member states vote for Palestine recognition as a state, it will be seen as a diplomatic and political milestone that could increase international pressure on Israel, Al Jazeera Report.
Recognition marks political support for Palestinian sovereignty and strengthens the impetus for a two-state solution, but it does not automatically create a fully functional state on the ground.
Palestine currently holds status as an “unpossible observer state” in the United Nations, which was awarded in 2012. The recognition of the UN General Assembly could create momentum for Palestine to seek the UN’s coalition-wide membership, although this requires the approval of the Security Committee, in which case the United States has always used its veto for Palestinian-related campaigns.
Recognition can also strengthen Palestine’s position in international institutions, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC). Furthermore, states that recognize Palestinian can establish or upgrade diplomatic missions and increase aid or political support.
But the recognition of the United Nations will not change the reality on the ground. Israel maintains military control over the occupied West Bank, where it continues to expand settlements on the Palestinian state. It also imposed a blockade on Gaza, depriving the enclave of humanitarian assistance.
