Tripoli: At least 50 Sudanese refugees died on the coast of eastern Libya, an international migration spokesman said. AFP Wednesday.
“This tragic incident occurred on a rubber ship carrying 75 Sudanese refugees on the coast of Tobrook, Libya, while the route to Greece,” the spokesman said. “At least 50 people died.” The shipwreck occurred on Sunday, IOM said in a post on X.
The spokesperson did not provide details of those age or gender on board. The spokesperson added: “IOM provides direct life-saving medical services to 24 survivors.”
Libya is a key transit country, with thousands of immigrants seeking maritime Europe every year.
Between January 1 and September 13, at least 456 people died and 420 disappeared on the Mediterranean route.
