Islamabad: The Space and High School Climax Research Council (Suparco) is integrating space-based applications into its disaster risk management framework, paving a path based on science and international cooperation to better prepare for natural disasters, a senior official said Monday.

Members of the Suparco Technology Zafar Iqbal launched the “Space-based Disaster Management Transfer Focus” in Islamabad’s Reactive Method Training, an agency aimed at shifting the country’s disaster response from reactive to proactive.

“These tools are used to enhance early warning systems and support national policies and authorities’ preparedness for disasters, as mitigation and adaptability are dual priorities,” Mr Iqbal said.

He stressed the importance of being ready before a crisis occurs.

“The challenge is not only to respond to disasters after a disaster, but more importantly to strengthen preparation and resilience before the attack,” Iqbal said.

“When leveraging satellite data, remote sensing and geospatial tools, we can monitor risks ahead of time, identify vulnerable areas, and support decision makers with timely and actionable information.” He added that this strategy can save lives, protect infrastructure and ensure more efficient deployment of scarce resources.
