Earlier Wednesday, part of a busy road in the Thai capital fell into trouble, leaving dozens of meters in front of a major hospital and forcing nearby people to evacuate.
Just outside the local police station and Vajira Hospital in the residential area of Bangkok, a hole about 50 meters (160 feet) pulled down the power cord, exposing a burst pipe. AFP The reporter saw it.
Dozens of police and city officials blocked the scene, and a pickup truck shaking on the edge of the hole.
Suriyachai Rawiwan, director of the Ministry of Disaster Prevention of Bangkok, told AFP At the scene, the collapse may have been related to recent heavy rain and water leakage.
“There is a leak in the water pipe – water from the pipe that erodes (the earth) under the road, so this incident happened,” he said.
“The eroded water caused some soil to fall to an unbuilt subway station, causing a collapse,” Suriyachai added.
The tunnel is part of an underground service built by the state-run Massive Rapid Transport Authority, which will investigate the cause of the cave.
Suriyachai said the local police station facing the collapsed road had been evacuated.
Senior Police Officer Sayam Boonsom also said he had ordered the evacuation of nearby apartment blocks.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt told AFP On site.
Videos posted on social media and verify AFP Several people were shown running from the construction area of Samsung Road as the street cracked and collapsed, revealing a hole filled with water.
Vajira Hospital, a teaching facility at a top medical university in Thailand, said it was suspending outpatient services in Facebook posts, adding that they will “recover as soon as possible.”
Noppadech Pitpeng, a 27-year-old hospital worker who lives in a nearby building, said he was terrified by Rumbing Sound on Wednesday morning, which woke him up.
“The sound is like a pole falling down, my whole flat shaking,” he said.
