Karachi University announces scholarships for students

A private organization has an annotated bursaries worth Rs. 5.9 million for students at the University of Karachi. The bursaries are awarded to students of five different departments under an agreement signal the university and the bail institution.

During the signing ceremony, Khalid Iraqi emphasized the challenges facing higher education in Pakistan. He noted that only two percent of students nationwide have access to higher education, mainly due to economic pressure.

Dr Iraqi said the lack of industrial growth and limited funding from the government for education further deepened the crisis. Many parents, he added, cannot afford to educate their children because of widespread unemployment.

He called on the government and the private sector to move forward to support education.

The vice-chancellor also pointed out that the University of Karachi has a scholarship for alumni-supported departments and the only university in Pakistan remains with a deed admission fund for students. Last year, RS10 million was allocated under this fund to help students who qualify academically but cannot afford tuition fees.
